Plants of Palestine
A3 B&W poster printed on recycled 150gsm cartridge paper, featuring delicate botanical illustrations of edible and medicinal wild plants of Palestine.
I made this print after meeting Palestinian activist, forager Sally Azzam after she spoke as part of a panel at a film screening of Jumana Manna's "Foragers" during the 2023 Bristol Palestine Film Festival.
I learnt so much at this event – how foraging is such an integral part of Palestinian life and culture; how unjust and deceptive Israeli laws have outlawed Palestinians from sustainably gathering wild food and medicine as they have for centuries; and how foraging has now become a powerful act of resistance, a way of nurturing and connecting with the land in the face of the most violent forms of oppression: ecocide and genocide.
Sally and I made this print in collaboration, and it features some of her favourite plants to forage for and cook with, most of which can also be found growing wild in the UK – a powerful reminder of how close we all are (and how plants know no borders!). We encourage you to look to the land and our communities for inspiration and care, and to grow any skill, joy or personal connection you have to this struggle into action! We are seeds of resistance; with so much potential to create the world we need and long for.
Sally Azzam is a Palestinian activist with 15 years experience working in human rights and women's organisations. Co-founder of Liwan cultural centre in Nazareth (a social enterprise aiming to revive and rejuvenate the historical part of the city). Since relocating to Bristol in 2021 Sally is part of the community engagement team of Amos Trust and the Bristol Palestine Film Festival.
100% of profits from the print will go towards projects and charities that Sally works with, with proceeds currently being collected for funding the Palestine Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainability, and the Amos Trust’s Gaza Emergency Appeal.
Printing and postage costs about £4 for one print. You can pay what you can by choosing your price as part of the options (£15 recommended with a sliding scale).
